Damian Dewhirst – The Residents’ Voice

The West End is a great place to live. Damian Dewhirst

It would be greater still if it were more liveable in. The Council is not there to serve the interests of speculators and bar owners.

It should be for us – ordinary residents who live here 7 days a week, 52 weeks a year.

If the Council worked for us not for them, all our lives would be vastly improved. Instead what do they do? Your Tory run Council has:

  • risked £17 M of your money speculating in Icelandic banks
  • cut nearly 300 jobs at City Hall as a consequence of financial blunders
  • increased fees and charges
  • allowed property speculation without any apparent control
  • given the peddlers of expensive booze and cheap sex free rein.

So incompetent is your Tory Council that it can't even make a profit on car parks – the only Council in the country not to do so!!

Of course this ward isn’t one neighbourhood – Soho, part of Fitzrovia, North and South Mayfair – each is its own neighbourhood with distinct communities and issues but some, such as noise and the night time leisure industry, affect large parts of the ward. I am a Local Government consultant and know how to get results.

I have lived in the West End for the last ten years and I set out some of the issues that will help improve the lives of residents in the West End Ward below . By voting Labour on October 8th you can send a clear message to the Council that what matters is us – the residents.

10 KEY ISSUES

  1. The Middlesex Hospital site and Park House in Oxford Street – I would urge that these two very large vacant sites be turned into temporary parks.
  2. Greening the Ward – some areas have trees but many parts of the ward are desolate and a programme of tree planting would benefit us all and the climate!
  3. Supporting the 10:10 Campaign – this campaign aims to encourage us all to try to reduce our carbon emissions by 10% by next year. I would encourage the Council to join it and produce practical advice for residents, businesses and schools
  4. Ham Yard in Soho –  I would encourage this key development with a major hotel, affordable housing and retail so as to regenerate this rather sleazy bit of Soho behind Piccadilly Circus.
  5. Berwick Street & Trenchard House in Soho – these schemes are long overdue and Trenchard House (ex police accommodation) has lain empty for years.
  6. Extending the West End Stress Area  – this has been promised in the past by the Conservatives but not implemented. I would press for an assessment of those parts of Mayfair, such as Shepherds Market, most affected by late night noise.
  7. Noise Abatement Zones – residents in many parts of this ward suffer noise levels well in excess of World Health Organisation (WHO) standards and they have not reduced over the last 5 years - and the council has powers it is not using.
  8. Ventilation issues – we would continue to press for all new installations to prove they have an annual service contract so they don’t cause a noise nuisance.
  9. Improving our Streetscapes – all parts of the ward should have quality streetscapes, but in bringing forward proposals to remove such things as traffic lights it important that residents are fully consulted. The Mayor and Tory Council have yet to do this.
  10. The Grosvenor Mayfair Estate – I would work with residents to either modify or stop the Brown Hart Gardens proposal since this very residential area is something of an oasis of tranquillity off Oxford Street, and long may it remain so.
