Pimlico & Knightsbridge News
Pimlico & Knightsbridge branch is in the south west of the CLP. It takes in the wards of Belgravia & Knightsbridge, Churchill and Warwick.

The branch takes in some of the most exclusive and expensive residential areas in the country. As the branch has a population of approximately 14,000, with dense pockets of social and sheltered housing distributed around the south, there is plenty of work can be done by the Labour Party and plenty of people who deserve representation.

The Branch usually meets at 7:30pm on the 2nd Monday of every month and members usually socialise afterwards. The branch campaign on a regular basis, hold street stalls and deliver leaflets through the local area.

In the past the branch has organised events at the House of Commons hosted by Tony Benn and Gwyneth Dunwoody as well as a summer party in Dolphin Square. CHELSEA BARRACKS – ON-SITE AFFORDABLE HOMES AND COMMUNITY BENEFITS MUST FORM PART OF NEW PLANS

Local Labour Party calls on Council to reconfirm commitment to on-site affordable housing and community facilities.

We are all aware that the proposed redevelopment of the former Chelsea Barracks site offers Westminster City council a once in a lifetime opportunity to provide affordable housing and community facilities for the local residence.

But rumors circulate in City hall that Westminster’s Tory councilors are poised to approve a deal with the developer that would threaten the prospect of these much needed community facilities.

Any attempts to avoid their responsibilities, as set out in the 2006 Planning Brief would be an disaster and would ignore the needs of many local people.

Your local Labour Party is therefore calling on Westminster City Council to:

  •  Commit to providing community facilities, as offered in the recently withdrawn proposal.
  •  Re-confirm its commitment to the 50% affordable housing target.
  • Assure local residents that the affordable housing will be provided on-site; and not in a different part of the borough, as per previous Candy & Candy developments.
  • Guarantee the residents living on Ebury Bridge Road will not be secluded from any community space provided as part of the new scheme.

Affordable Housing?

E-mail Print PDF
Churchill Gardens EstatePeople in Churchill wonder about the future of affordable housing as private landlords have taken over so many flats.
The Deputy Leader of Westminster Council has diverted £500,000 away from providing flats for people in housing need and into the refurbishment of Leicester Square, admitting that the money would just "sit earning interest" otherwise.
Deputy Leader Cllr Robert Davis was speaking at a meeting of the Planning sub-committee, on an application to redevelop the site including Odeon Leicester Square. Westminster policy which Davis agreed said that the developers ought to provide £2m to affordable housing on other sites. When the developers offered only £728,000 last month, the committee rejected them and asked for more. The developers came back this month offering an additional £500,000, still less than policy required. At the sub-committee, Cllr Davis claimed it would be a "better benefit to the greater community" to put this extra money into the refurbishment of Leicester Square.

The Conservative Record

Labour Councillors have slated Westminster Conservatives affordable homes record after the latest Council survey shows that of the 683 residential units which were built in Westminster between April 2007 and March 2008, only 74 (11%) of these were affordable units. Labour say that, with many hundreds of local families living in overcrowded accommodation, the Conservatives are making it even harder for low and middle income families to find decent accommodation in central London. Labour say that the Council's practice of accepting cash in lieu of on-site affordable housing is only acting to fuel the local housing crisis.

Conservative Councillors

On top of that Westminster Conservative Councillor Lee Rowley wants to evict Council tenants from their homes if they make a success of their lives and get a good job, according to an article he wrote for the ConservativeHome website. Councillor Rowley argues that as soon as someone is earning enough to buy a flat they should be evicted. Meanwhile Curchhill councillors appear to be focusing elsewhere. On her website one says she is "based in Kent" where her husband is trying to become an MP and another is spending time in Bristol where he is also trying to become an MP.
