How can I get involved?

There is a wide range of activities that members can get involved in.

The Labour Party is a democratic Party where members are involved in policy making and the election of Branch, CLP and National Party Officers from electing a delegate from your branch to the General Committee to electing the Party Leader.

How much time would being involved mean?

The level of involvement and time commitment is down to you. As well as Policy meetings and debates there are also a number of Social events and opportunities to get involved in the areas of policy which most concern you.

How is the CLP organised?

The General Committee is the highest body in the CLP and contains delegates from all branches. The GC elects the CLP’s Officers and has the final say on the running of the Party. The GC meets on a monthly basis.

The Administrative work of the CLP is done by the Executive Committee, which is made up of the CLP’s Officers and delegates elected by each branch and Affiliated organisation. The EC provides a strategic focus for the CLP and meets once a month.

Each member belongs to their local branch, the branch organises local campaigns and events in the local area and elects delegates to the GC and EC.

The Local Government Committee is made up of delegates from the CLPs that cover the City of Westminster area and the Labour Group on the City Council.

The Committee oversees the Local Government strategy of the party in Westminster and campaigns on local Government issues.

How can members take part in the Policy making process?

Branch members can get involved in the policy making process of the National Party by taking part in the regular policy forums that the CLP hold or by submitting motions to the CLP’s General Committee. From 1998 to 2000, thousands of members from all over the country helped produce the nine final policy documents that formed the basis of our 2001 General Election manifesto. This process is now discussing the issues that will shape our next election manifesto.

Partnership in Power provides the opportunity for an ongoing dialogue between the party’s institutions and the party in the country. In addition, Partnership in Power provides both members and non-members with a forum for making their ideas and suggestions heard through discussions at local policy forums and through submissions to Policy Commissions.
