The City of London Labour party is an active campaigning branch, with local campaigns ranging from most recently the closure of the City of London Home Care service, and the privatisation of the NHS, to local planning, the living wage, to standing candidates for the next elections to the City’s Common Council in March 2013.

Events

In between campaigning, the Branch meets monthly on the second Wednesday of January, February, March, April, May, June and July.

Then it meets on the first Wednesday in September to prepare for Annual Conference, and thereafter on the second Wednesday of October, November and December (for Christmas drinks). These meetings take place in a local public venue.

A fund raising supper is usually held in a member’s flat after each branch meeting to get to know each other better and help meet the costs of meeting rooms, newsletters, leaflets and local election campaigns. An added attraction are the views from members with flats in the Barbican Towers.

Campaigns

The proposed closure of the City of London Home Care Service – this issue is live. It was flagged up in a House Group meeting and taken up by a branch member. Concern was posted on Barbican Talk and has attracted hundreds of hits and some hard hitting comments, mainly from residents who are not Labour Party members but equally concerned.

A copy of a letter written by a member to the Head of Service is included among the comments, and has been sent to the Barbican Residents’ Association and all the House Groups, as well as City of London Common Councillors.
